The Ashes of Sodom

We must ask ourselves: can we see echoes of Sodom in our world today?

Abraham's Plea

The destruction of two cities simultaneously is not a tale we tell for amusement or to indulge in morbid curiosity. Instead, it is a story of divine judgment etched in the landscape of history: the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked sin and a powerful testament to god mercy. The story in Genesis 18 and 19 paints a grim picture of two cities steeped in wickedness. Abraham, a righteous man, intercedes with God, pleading that the cities be spared if even a handful of righteous souls could be found in Glimmer of Hope. God, in His mercy, agrees. Two angels are sent to Sodom not to rain down fire immediately but to investigate the city's actual state.

  A Polluted City

What they find is not simply a few bad apples spoiling the bunch., but a pervasive atmosphere of rampant immorality, a complete disregard for God's laws, and a brazen embrace of perversion. The men of Sodom, young and old, surround Lot's house, demanding to violate the angelic visitors – a horrific display of their depravity. Indeed, the men of Sodom desired to participate in wicked and perverse acts, which wasn't just a momentary lapse in judgment; it was a symptom of an immoral society.

Weight of Wickedness

The specific nature of the sin of Sodom is often debated. While the attempted sexual assault of the angels is a clear act of wickedness, the broader context suggests a culture saturated with injustice, violence, and a complete rejection of God's moral order. The Hebrew word "Sodom" itself has become synonymous with sin, particularly of a sexual nature. It signified a society that has lost its moral compass, where right is called wrong and wrong is embraced as right.

Today, are there signs of a similar moral decay, a disregard for God's design, and a celebration of that which is perverse?   Sadly, the answer is often yesWe see it in the breakdown of the family unit, the rampant sexual immorality glorified in media, the disregard for the sanctity of life, and the increasing acceptance of behaviors that were once considered taboo.

 A Society Adrift💥

Instead of Paul writing a letter to the Roman church Testament, he addresses the Roman congregation in person and warns them against such complacency toward sin. According to Romans 1:26-27, "For this reason God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." This passage speaks clearly about the consequences of rejecting God's design for human sexuality. It's not about judging individuals but about recognizing the destructive nature of sin and the importance of adhering to God's righteous standards.

The story of Sodom is not just about judgment; it is also about grace. Even in the face of such overwhelming wickedness, God showed mercy to Lot and his family. They were spared, not because of their righteousness, but because of God's covenant with Abraham. When humanity turns toward God, His grace is always available to those who turn to Him, even in a world that seems to be spiraling out of control. C.S. Lewis wisely stated, "The weight of glory is the experience of being perfectly known and loved." This perfect love is offered to us through Jesus Christ. He is the one who bore the weight of our sins, the one who offers us forgiveness and redemption. He is the only way to escape the judgment. coming upon the world.
